Largely unnoticed by the Western public, Syria has become a narco-state. Today, the illegal drug trade is a key source of income for the Assad regime. Sanctions alone are unlikely to solve the problem.

It took a long time for the West to recognize the danger posed by the Captagon trade from Syria.

At the end of April, however, the European Union imposed sanctions on 25 members of Bashar al-Asad’s regime, who are said to play a leading role in the trafficking of illegal drugs.

Eight companies from Syria have also been placed on the sanctions list.

Four weeks earlier, the United States and Great Britain had already announced entry and account bans against several Syrians who are said to be involved in the lucrative business with white pills.
