A new plane crash has occurred in the USA, just days after a collision between a commercial flight and a military helicopter over Washington, which resulted in the deaths of 67 people. A medical transport plane carrying a pediatric patient and five other people, all of Mexican nationality, crashed on Friday night in a neighborhood northeast of Philadelphia, turning into a fireball and setting multiple houses ablaze.
“More innocent lives have been lost in this tragic accident,” said U.S. President Donald Trump on his social media platform, Truth, upon hearing the news. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) released a statement confirming that the crashed aircraft was a Learjet 55 and that six people were involved.
According to some local media, the plane carried a pilot, a doctor, another crew member, and the child being transported, accompanied by an adult. “The plane was headed to Springfield-Branson National Airport in Missouri. The FAA and the NTSB will investigate what happened,” the FAA statement reads.
Flight data indicates that the small jet took off from the airport at 6:06 p.m. local time and disappeared from radar about 30 seconds later, after climbing to an altitude of nearly 500 meters. The cause of the crash is unclear. Governor Josh Shapiro wrote on social media that he is in contact with the mayor and emergency responders.
“We are offering all possible resources,” he said. Videos posted on social media show a massive explosion and a thick column of smoke rising rapidly from the crash site, not far from a busy shopping center.
The crash occurred less than five kilometers from Northeast Philadelphia Airport, which mainly serves corporate jets and charter flights. Photos taken at the crash site show multiple residential homes on fire. Firefighters confirmed that several structures were engulfed in flames due to the accident, in the area of Cottman Avenue and Roosevelt Boulevard.
