Special gift from Bill Gates on the 50th anniversary of Microsoft, founded on April 4, 1975, together with Paul Allen: on his blog, he published the original source code of Altair Basic, the company’s first software.
“It feels like just yesterday that Paul and I wrote the code that would become our company’s first product. It remains the coolest code I’ve ever written,” writes the entrepreneur and philanthropist, who, in a long post, summarizes the history of the tech giant and offers tech enthusiasts access to the resource—a link to a PDF over 150 pages long.
At the time, the company was called Micro-Soft, with a hyphen that was later dropped for the current name, Microsoft.
Co-founder Paul Allen passed away in 2018 at the age of 65.
“We created Microsoft believing in the vision of a computer on every desk and in every home,” explains Gates. “Five decades later, Microsoft continues to innovate to make life easier and work more productive. 50 years is a major milestone that wouldn’t have been possible without great leaders like Steve Ballmer (former CEO) and Satya Nadella (current CEO), as well as the many people who’ve worked at the company over the years.”
