Ceiling collapses at nightclub in Santo Domingo: 58 dead and 160 injured

The death toll continues to rise after the roof collapsed at one of the trendiest nightclubs in Santo Domingo, the Jet Set, in the Dominican Republic. According to a provisional report from the Emergency Operations Center, there are currently 79 dead.

Over 150 people have been taken to hospital. Among the victims are Octavio Dotel, 51, former Mexican baseball star, and Tony Blanco, a former Dominican professional baseball player who played for the Washington Nationals in the U.S. Major League Baseball’s National League. Also killed was merengue singer Rubby Perez, who was performing at the venue.

Many hours after the serious incident (which occurred in the early hours of April 8), the cause of the roof collapse at Jet Set nightclub, a renowned club in the National District, is still unclear.

“My deepest solidarity goes out to the families who are still waiting for news of their loved ones,” wrote the Mayor of Santo Domingo, Carolina Mejía de Garrigó, on social media.
