The man detained on Monday after a stabbing on a train travelling through Brussels has appeared before an examining magistrate and has been arrested on suspicion of attempted manslaughter, the Brussels public prosecutor’s office says. Nothing is yet known about the suspect’s motives.

Local police apprehended the suspect at Brussels North railway station following the incident.  “The suspect is a 27-year-old man,” says Yasmina Vanoverschelde of the Brussels public prosecutor’s office. “He surrendered immediately. Police were also able to seize a pocketknife.”

According to the prosecutor’s office, the man experienced earlier psychiatric episodes. “The investigation is continuing and is being conducted by the Railway Police,” the prosecutor’s office notes.

The victim, a passenger, was taken to hospital after the stabbing and is no longer in a critical condition but must remain in hospital for some time.
