The atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide is at its highest level in the last 800,000 years, and 2024 was likely the first year to exceed pre-industrial levels by more than 1.5 degrees, with a global average temperature of 1.55 degrees, making it the hottest year in the 175 years of recorded observations. These are some of the data contained in the latest report from the WMO (World Meteorological Organization). Long-term warming remains below 1.5 degrees.

A wake-up call
“Although a single year of warming above 1.5°C does not mean that the long-term temperature targets of the Paris Agreement are out of reach, it is a wake-up call that we are increasing the risks to our lives, our economies, and the planet,” said WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo.
